Canada's Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) is pioneering deep-lake cooling of Toronto offices by linking the first office complex it owns to the cooling system it partly owns. Oxford Properties Group is to connect One University Avenue, an 18- storey building built in 1986, to the Enwave cooling system this spring. The Enwave deep-lake water cooling system, said to be the largest of its type in the world, draws cold water from Lake Ontario to provide naturally chilled water to cool buildings, replacing in-house electrical air conditioning systems.
'This Oxford property is the first office building to join an already impressive group of Toronto facilities, including the Air Canada Centre and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, who subscribe to our service,' said Dennis Fotinos, President of Enwave. The company is formerly the Toronto District Heating Corp., which is co-owned by OMERS and the city.
The lake cooling system, whose construction began last summer, is capable of cooling 2 million m2 of building space, eliminating the need for more than 35 GWh per year of local coal-fired electricity. Enwave says the emissions reduction is equivalent to removing 8,000 cars from the road.
